The Guided Bull's Island Auto Tour

For those who enjoy getting out into nature but cannot hike long distances or those who would like to see more of Bull’s Island, travelling in a vehicle may be the answer.  Enjoy the cultural and natural histories of Cape Romain’s Bull’s Island and discover the close interconnections of the human history with the natural landscape. 

The Coastal Expeditions ferry will leave at 9am from the Garris Landing pier.  Arrive and check in 15 minutes prior to departure.  Dress for the weather, bring a lunch, drink, camera, and binoculars.

Tickets:  $30 adults / $15 children.  Reservations are required by calling Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center at 928.3368.

Charles Pinckney site Film Series

The National Park Service rangers are presenting documentaries about African American culture and history in the lowcountry at the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site.

March 20:  “Grass Roots:  The Enduring Art of the Lowcountry Basket” follows Mount Pleasant basketmakers as they harvest material, create baskets, and discuss the meaning of their work.

March 27:  “Bin Yah:  There’s No Place Like Home” uses the testimonies of Mount Pleasant residents to illuminate the threat that suburban development poses to local black communities and the preservation of Gullah culture.

Poet-in-Residence at Fort Moultrie

The National Park Service and the South Carolina Poetry Initiative are pleased to announce that SC Poet Laureate Marjory Wentworth will be Poet-in-Residence at Fort Moultrie beginning in March.  Ms. Wentworth will conduct community based readings and workshops.   The objectives of this residency are to make Fort Moultrie known as a site that recognizes the value of the arts in SC and to use the art of writing poetry as a vehicle throught which individuals can connect to the powerful history surrounding them.

Writing Workshop on March 26 from 2-4pm is open to anyone interested in learning and writing about Fort Moultrie and Sullivan’s Island.  Children age 8 and over are welcome and families are encouraged to attend.

Community Reading on April 30 from 4-6pm will feature Ms. Wentworth reading her poetry.

Old Village Garden and Art Tour

Attend the Old Village Home Garden & Art Tour and enjoy a rare opportunity to explore the picturesque homes and gardens of Mount Pleasant’s Old Village.  An art show and sale of works by local artists, musical entertainment, and refreshments are also included in the self guided tour benefitting the American Red Cross.  Aslo included this year are tastings from Mount Pleasant restaurants in some of the homes.

5th Annual Women's Heart Health Symposium

Women’s Heart Care at the MUSC Heart and Vascular Center hosts this event which is designed to educate women about risk factors, warning signs, prevention of women’s heart disease.  The symposium features expert advice on heart disease in women, nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction.

Admission:  $10 cash or check.  Health screening available for a limited number of attendees for an additional $10.

25th Annual Starlight Pops

First Federal presents Starlight Pops, a spring staple on lowcountry calendars with a pops concert from the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, regional arts and crafts vendors, an art village featuring artists from Charleston Artist Guild, and elaborate picnicking. 

Arrive early so you have plenty of time to stroll the grounds and enjoy all the activities.  Bring  a picnic and chairs and blankets for seating.  The picnic judging contest begins at 6:45.  Limited concessions will be available for sale from 82 Queen.

Pre-concert music starts at 5:30 with performances from Summerville High School Steel Drum Band, Jennie Moore Elementary Chorus, and several other school groups.

Tickets:  FREE for ages 12 and younger / $10 for ages 13-21 and $20 for adults in advance from First Federal offices, online, and Boone Hall Farms / $15 for ages 13-21 and $25 for adults at the gate.
