Winners of the 2011 Westie Awards

Golden Cow flying on the sky

Each Westie Award winner received his or her own "Golden Cow", symbolic of West Ashley's beloved landmark, the Coburg Cow.

In January, we posted a blog post alerting our residents here at Haddon Hall of the upcoming Westie Awards and detailing how to go about nominating upstanding local individuals for the awards.

Winners of the Westie Awards were selected in February, and on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, West Ashley’s newspaper, West Of, announced the nominees in its special “Westie Awards” issue. In addition to this special recognition, all winners received a “Golden Cow”.

Among the twelve people who were nominated for a Westie, having worked hard to make our community a better place to live, several of them were instrumental in efforts that we here at Haddon Hall personally benefit from. Here we’ve spotlighted a couple of those outstanding individuals.

Edward Kronsberg, manager of Ashley Shoppes, has diligently worked to improve the Avondale Business District. Kronsberg personally works hard to keep Avondale clean and beautiful, cutting back overgrown shrubs and picking up litter, in addition to spearheading the annual Keep Charleston Beautiful’s Clean Sweep Initiative.

Working tirelessly to improve the recreational opportunities for all West Ashley residents, William Eubanks, Creative Director for Urban Edge Studio, has personally spent a countless amount of time, energy, and money on making the West Ashley Greenway, a 10 ½ mile trail in our community, better. As leader of the renovation project, Eubanks has created a plan that will improve the public trail significantly, including connecting more West Ashley schools & landmarks to the greenway and the addition of public restrooms & water fountains along the trail.

West Ashley's Newspaper Wants Your Westie Award Nominations

Golden Cow flying on the sky

Each Westie Award nominee will receive his or her own Golden Cow award.

West Ashley’s Newspaper, West Of, is honoring the ten people who have worked their hardest and done their best to make a constructive, encouraging impact on West Ashley this year, helping our community to move in a positive direction. And they need your help finding these first-rate, upstanding citizens before time runs out! Nominees for the Westie Awards will be individuals who make a positive difference in West Ashley—teachers, volunteers, local politicians, entrepreneurs, health care professionals, and community activists, among others. Nominees can be business owners, but the Westie Award will not be awarded to a business, selecting the “best” local business in our community.

The Westie Award seeks to honor individuals who personally aspired to make West Ashley a better place for everyone who lives here this past year and achieved their goal, through serving the community, sacrificing their time and money to help others, or coming up with new ideas for a bright future in West Ashley. On Wednesday, February 16, 2011, those nominees who are selected will be immortalized in the special “Westie Awards” issue of West Of. They will also receive a Golden Cow, an award that is symbolic of West Ashley’s beloved landmark, the Coburg Cow.

Please make your nominations for the Westie Awards now because the deadline is fast-approaching: nominations will not be accepted after Wednesday, February 2. If you know of an outstanding individual who should be nominated for a Westie Award, please e-mail publisher@westof.net with your nominee’s name and a 100-300 word paragraph detailing why you believe he or she is worthy of receiving a Westie.

Bees Landing Dog Park is Now Open: Haddon Hall Apartment Residents Rejoice

Dog

Why haven't we been to the Bees Landing dog park?

We wrote recently here about Charleston’s dog parks. The Haddon Hall Apartments, being a pet-friendly community, is pleased to say we now have a brand new dog park right here in the neighborhood.

Of course, there’s plenty of room right here at the Haddon Hall apartment community to take your furry friend for a walk. But now, when Rover wants to get off the leash and really stretch his four legs, you just have to walk less than a mile to the Bees Landing Recreation Center.

Work has been underway for quite some time on the dog park there, and there’s still work to be done, but word is that it’s ready for business. It’s now fenced in, and the special escape-proof double gate is set up. As of this writing, the park is still waiting to install a water source and a poop bag dispenser. So, please make your own provisions for water and cleaning up.

But by all means, you and Rover should go down and give it a spin. There’s plenty of room to run free, and lots of stuff to sniff, and maybe even some new canine friends to meet. (We’re talking about your dog here of course, but if you’d like to sniff stuff, too, be our guest.)

We’re please to see Bees Landing continue to improve, making our Grand Oaks neighborhood even better than ever.

For information on Bees Landing Recreation Center, including a schedule of classes and other activities, go to the City of Charleston’s website.

Charleston on the List of Cities to See Avatar: Special Editon on (Re)Opening Day

Poster for Avatar: Special EditionMaybe you loved the movie. Maybe you didn’t. But you have to concede, James Cameron‘s latest flick Avatar was close to being a popular culture phenomenon.

The story of corporate indifference to environmental and cultural destruction stuck a chord with many viewers. And even critics of the story line were impressed with the amazing computer generated characters and scenery and the 3D effects.

Cameron is giving Avatar an extra push by re-running the film in theaters just months after its first run ended. Now it’s called Avatar: Special Edition. What’s special is that Cameron added about nine minutes of new material– all computer generated.

Determining whether the extra nine minutes of motion picture magic is worth buying a ticket to see it again obviously depends on how much you liked Avatar the first time around. Or, perhaps on whether you were meditating on some mountaintop and missed the film altogether. But in any event, here’s your second chance to see it on a giant screen, with a giant sound system.

To generate more excitement, it’s first showing in a limited number of cinemas across the country. Fortunately for residents of the Haddon Hall Apartments, Charleston is one of the cities that gets to see the film on its re-opening day. That happens Friday, August 27.

It’s showing at the Regal Palmetto Grande Stadium 16 in Mount Pleasant, which is pretty much on the other side of town from our apartment community… but we are talking about a Major Pop Culture Event here, and with Haddon Hall’s easy access to I-526, getting across town is pretty painless.  And pain free living is what we’re all about at the Haddon Hall Apartments.
