Masters Golf Tournament

The PGA Tour might have four Majors, but many would argue that one of them stands above the rest, and that’s the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. With its iconic green jacket and long and storied history, the Masters truly is a tradition unlike any other, as CBS likes to remind viewers at every chance it gets.

Haddon Hall Getaway: The Footlight Theater

The Footlight Theater is on Charleston's historic Queen Street

The Footlight Theater is on Charleston's historic Queen Street.

Sometimes life gets complicated, and it feels good just to cocoon in your comfortable Haddon Hall apartment home. But there’s so much great arts activity in Charleston, you really should venture out of the Grand Oaks Plantation neighborhood at least occasionally.

The Footlight Theater is an excellent enticement. The upcoming production of The Lion in Winter promises to be another fine theater experience. The Footlight Theater’s website says, “This ingenious drama pits King Henry II against his strong-willed wife Eleanor of Aquitaine and their three heirs in the 12th-century struggle for love and power.” The original Broadway production won three Tony Awards.

The Lion in Winter is on stage at the Footlight Theater October 1 through 17. The theater is located at 20 Queen Street in Charleston’s historic downtown. For more information go to the Footlight Theater’s website.

A Daytrip to Sullivan's Island: Go Seining With Beach Experts

A sand dollar in the sand of Sullivan's Island, South Carolina

You might find a sand dollar during the South Carolina Aquarium outing

We wrote here recently about a fun event happening at the South Carolina Aquarium.

It seems a bit early to be writing about the Aquarium again, but this just seems like such an interesting activity that we couldn’t resist telling you about it.

The South Carolina Aquarium is organizing a seining outing on Saturday, August 7 at Sullivan’s Island. You’ll help drag a large net (a seine) through the surf, and you’ll comb through the beach to see what turns up.

You’ll find all kinds of fish, shells, crabs and such. Aquarium experts will help interpret what you find, telling the story of the beach and sea creatures that inhabit the island.

One thing you need to know– it’s for Aquarium members only. If you’re not already a member, maybe this is the event that makes you decide to become one. It sounds like a terrific reason, too, to head out from our home in West Ashley for some fun on  the other side of the harbor.

For more information on the outing, call (843) 577-FISH (3474). For more information on Aquarium membership, go to the South Carolina Aquarium membership web page.

Free Music Sampler for Those Who Can't Go to Bonnaroo

Haddon Hall offers a link to National Public Radio's Bonnaroo music sampler.I know a few people who are heading out after work today, making the drive to Manchester, Tennessee for this year’s Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. Since it started in the summer of 2002, it’s become the biggest and best and most awesomest summer music festival in the country.

Alas, I’ve never been, and I won’t be going this year.

I am benefiting indirectly from the festival, though, and you can, too.

National Public Radio (which has become as much an Internet outlet as a radio network) is offering a free sampler of songs from performers scheduled for this weekend’s Bonnaroo.

Yes. It’s a free download. No strings attached. (Well, you will have to register for an iTunes account if you don’t already have one. That might be considered an attached string for some people.)

The sampler is eleven tracks by eleven excellent bands that are among the up-and-comers of the festival, including The Black Keys, Ozomatli, Miranda Lambert, The Dodos, and others.

Don’t worry if you haven’t heard of these bands (I’m reasonably hip, and I only knew two of the artists on the list). The music is all at the very least interesting, and you’re likely to get hooked on a few of the tracks. And, well, it’s FREE. You have nothing to lose but a little space on your iPod.

NPR’s free Bonnaroo sampler will be available through July 31. The instructions are pretty simple. Click —> here <— to go to the NPR webpage.

Enjoy.  And here’s to making the trip to Tennessee next year.
