Donating and Recycling in Charleston

International Recycle Symbol

Remember to think "green" by donating & recycling in Charleston!

Here at Haddon Hall, we pride ourselves on maintaining a clean, well-kept community, and we work hard to live a “green” lifestyle by implementing and promoting eco-friendly practices (such as recycling) in our daily lives. We would like to encourage our residents to “think green” before disposing of non-household waste (items like electronic devices, furniture, appliances, etc) in the dumpster area, and instead of disposing of these items, consider recycling them at one of the following facilities close to your home here at Haddon Hall:

•    Recycle unwanted items at Bees Ferry Landfill (located at 1344 Bees Ferry Road in Charleston, less than three miles from Haddon Hall). On Bees Ferry Landfill’s website, you’ll find a list of acceptable items, including cardboard and other recyclables, in addition to electronic waste and other items.

•    Donate your unwanted, gently-used household items and clothes to Goodwill Industries. There is a Goodwill drop-off location at 3516 Shelby Ray Court in Charleston (less than 2 ½ miles away from Haddon Hall). You will be given a tax deduction for donating items at this drop-off site.

•    Donate unwanted household goods to Habit for Humanity, and request a pickup of these items. There are several Habitat for Humanity chapters located in the Charleston area; the closest locations are Charleston Habitat for Humanity (located at 731 Meeting Street in Charleston, phone number: 843-579-0777) and Sea Islands Habitat for Humanity (located at 2545 Bohicket Road in Johns Island, phone number: 843-768-0998).

How to Save Water at Home

Would you like to join the ever-growing green movement, residents of Haddon Hall? You can do your part to help save the planet at home by consciously working to conserve the water you use. If you’d like to learn how to save water at home, check out these excellent tips, courtesy of Real Simple, on how to conserve your water use.

Be Eco-Friendly with your Water Bill

Use these tips to cut down your water usage

  • Shut off your faucet while you’re brushing your teeth. If you turn off the faucet each time you brush your teeth for an entire year, you can save around 2,880 gallons of water. Make a conscious effort to save the water you use in your bathroom.
  • When you leave your home for the day, bring your water with you instead of purchasing a bottle of water. It takes seven liters of water to produce a single one-liter plastic bottle. Refill your own eco-friendly (reusable) bottle at home, and take it to work or school with you every day.
  • Purchase recycled-paper products instead of products made from new paper. This can help conserve water because products made from recycled paper use a lot less water when they’re manufactured than other paper products.

Thank Our Warriors TODAY!

Are you looking forward to spending the holidays with your friends, family, and loved ones?  It’s a special time of year when our thoughts turn to coziness at home full of decorations, gifts, and treats. Most of us will receive many wonderful greetings of the season from near and afar.

For today, let’s focus on the service and sacrifice of our service men and women who won’t be at home this Christmas.  Many are standing in harm’s way to give us the freedom to enjoy the Christmas season’s blessing at home with family and friends.

TOMORROW IS THE DEADLINE to send a holiday card to American service members, their families, and veterans all over the world through the American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes Holiday Mail for Heroes program!

Cards not postmarked by Friday, 12/10 are undeliverable.  Take a moment to thank our Warriors…you’ll be glad you did!

Keep Thanksgiving under Control with these Tips

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and with friends or family coming over to visit, the holiday can feel pretty hectic as we go from store-to-store searching for the perfect ingredients for our master meal next Thursday.

    A vintage Thanksgiving Greeting card

Enjoy your Upcoming Thanksgiving with Friends and Family

  1. Start from a clean slate: Remove any clutter from your kitchen counters you might have. I always like to start with a cleared off area as I prepare and cook my meals.
  2. Start with the easy recipes First: I personally find it best to create the side dishes first. By using our traditional recipes, the sides are the easy part of Thanksgiving. Prepare them the day before Thanksgiving and prepare and cook the turkey the day of Thanksgiving for your guests.
  3. Keep things Simple: Even an experienced chef knows that some times the best recipes are the ones that have the simplest ingredients, so keep your recipes organized and simple for the best experience.
  4. Relax and Rest Yourself: Remember, your guests came to visit you, not your food. So while the sides are sitting comfortably in the fridge and the turkey is basking in the oven, kick off your shoes and enjoy their company.

Time to adjust the Clock

We have some pretty neat things going on here in Charleston this weekend. The 9th Annual Taste of the Town is just a few days away, and with some sunny, but chilly weather this weekend, it’s a great time to sit out side, read a good book, and enjoy the weekend.

Old Alarm Clock

Don't forget to reset the Clocks this Saturday Night

But before we lay our heads down to rest on Saturday night, let’s not forget to set our clocks back one hour for Daylight Savings. While the official ‘time’ to reset the clock is at 2:00 AM on Sunday morning, I personally won’t be awake to adjust my alarm clock, so I’m planning on adjusting mine before I go to bed on Saturday.

While most cell phones and computers will automatically adjust their time, don’t forget to reset the microwave and stove clocks as well as other electronics. If you don’t set your clocks, you might end up being late to the Taste of the Town in Summerville, and you don’t want to miss a minute of the event.
